You know how unpredictable Ohio weather is. When you’re expecting snow, it rains. When you’re expecting sunshine, it rains. The wet, gray weather is fine to deal with as long as long as it remains outside.
When moisture seeps into your home, it can cause mold to grow in places such as the walls, floors and HVAC components. Mold also can potentially cause health problems. Thus, it’s important to employ a moisture-fighting strategy over and above using mold cleaners and household products.
One strategy involves minimizing and/ or eliminating the moisture around your home. For example, fix any leaky pipes as soon as possible. Leaking pipes can create mold in areas you don’t normally pay attention to such as cabinets, closets and the basement.
You should not ignore the moisture outside your home. Eliminate moisture around your property’s foundation. You can either place drainage in the area or slope the ground in a way that rain water and melted snow drain away from the foundation.
You also want to keep all appliances such as clothes dryers that generate moisture properly vented outside. Anytime moisture-generating appliances are vented inside the home, it provides an attractive spot for mold to grow.
Another moisture-fighting strategy involves controlling humidity. Ideally, relative humidity in your home should remain between 30 and 50 percent. A whole-house dehumidifier, working with your HVAC system, is the best way to control humidity in your home.
Semi-annual maintenance on your HVAC system may seem like paying needless money, but it isn’t. Having a HVAC technician preform scheduled maintenance on you system helps fight moisture in the home, among other benefits. You also want to make sure that the vents in the home are unobstructed by furniture or other belongings.
