It’s certainly the time of year when a broken air conditioner can be very unpleasant, if not dangerous. With temperatures and humidity rising, the increased demand on your cooling equipment places heavy demands on your system, increasing the likelihood of failure. Attention to a few areas can help you prevent a system breakdown:
Leaks
If your home starts to feel uncomfortable and you have not changed the thermostat, your A/C could be leaking refrigerant. You may be able to detect a leak by looking for oily streaks or patches around your A/C equipment, but many leaks can be inside equipment and should be inspected by a professional. In any event, an HVAC pro will need to do the repair if your system is leaking refrigerant.
Poor maintenance
The easiest way to keep your air conditioner functioning well is to make sure it has been properly maintained. Schedule a maintenance visit from an HVAC professional to tighten and lubricate moving parts and perform an inspection. Maintenance you can do on your own includes replacing air conditioner filters, clearing debris from around the outside A/C unit and cleaning intake vents. Compromised airflow strains your air conditioner, reduces efficiency and can cause a breakdown.
Drainage issues
Air conditioners remove humidity from air as it’s cooled, and must dispose of the extracted water in some way. This water is usually routed outside through a small pipe or tube that can become clogged. Drainage problems can cause harm to the equipment as well as expensive water damage inside the home. Prevent this by occasionally using a wet/dry vacuum from the exterior end of the system to suck out water and debris.
Electronic failure
While components sometimes fail no matter how well they’re maintained, protecting your system by replacing air filters and having it routinely serviced can reduce unnecessary strain. In addition, when choosing a new HVAC system, make sure that it’s sized correctly, as oversizing can cause extra wear and tear on electronic components along with inefficient operation.
