Here at Energy 1, we talk a lot about the importance of looking for the blue Energy Star logo when you buy a new HVAC system, and how much it can save you. But why? What is the logo, and why should you trust it? What can it really do for you?
The federal Energy Star program began in 1992 as a joint venture between the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency. The program’s goal was to identify and promote products that would save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The first appliances to bear the blue logo were computers and monitors, but within a few years, the scope expanded to include refrigerators, dishwashers, and air conditioning and heating systems.
Today, Energy Star labels can be found on thousands of products in more than 60 different categories. You can even find its certification on installation and contractor services, as well as new homes. The logo shows that the product or service has met the program’s rigorous standards for energy efficiency. If it’s an appliance, it has been shown to save energy over other, similar models, while still providing the same basic features and level of performance. It also has been proven specifically to save money. If the product costs significantly more than other, less efficient models, then the energy savings must compensate for that extra cost within a reasonable amount of time.
On certain types of appliances, the logo can be found on the yellow EnergyGuide label, along with a breakdown of that unit’s average energy consumption, as compared to similar models. In short, the Energy Star logo is your guide to finding products and appliances that will save you energy. Whether you’re buying a new HVAC system, hiring a contractor, or looking for a new home, always make sure it’s Energy Star certified, to take away your worries about quality or efficiency.
