If you suffer from allergies, the change of seasons probably finds you scrambling to improve indoor air quality. Allergies in any season can make life unbearable. These indoor air quality tips will help you improve living conditions inside your home this spring, and some of them apply to improving the air quality of your home year-round:
- Remove your shoes. Allergens cling to the bottom of shoes, and are spread around your home – if you don’t take your shoes off first. Follow this rule yourself, and make sure family members and visitors follow it, too.
- Keep mold at bay, a common trigger of allergies and asthma. Use a whole-house dehumidifier for comprehensive control over relative humidity and indoor air quality.
- Take care of dust mites, which like to bore into bedding, pillows and mattresses. Their droppings and shed skin can trigger allergy symptoms. Control dust mites by washing bedding in hot water weekly, and use casings around pillows and mattresses that provide protection against dust mites.
- Pare down knick-knacks. Dust settles on decorative items, piles of books and papers, and more. Keep only essential items on display to make cleaning easier.
- Dust with the right tools. Instead of moving dust around when cleaning with a dry rag (and dusting spray), employ an electrostatic duster that permanently captures dust.
- Don’t open windows, keeping the home sealed tight, to prevent allergens from freely floating into the home. This doesn’t mean that you can’t occasionally open up the house to allow fresh air inside.
- Replace the A/C filter regularly. Households with allergy sufferers may have to replace the filter more frequently than once a month. You can also switch the thermostat fan to “on” when dusting and vacuuming to cycle the air through the filter.
- Use an air purifier. A combination of air-cleaning technologies provides comprehensive control over indoor air quality.
- Use a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum, which will trap more allergens and dust inside the device as they pass through the filter.
