Thanks to continuing advances in technology, today’s heating and cooling equipment is more energy efficient than ever. However, many homeowners find themselves spending valuable time and effort comparing one energy-saving device over another. With so many options available in the market, it pays to have a surefire way of finding products that meet minimum efficiency standards, as set by the federal government.
The Energy Star program was Initially designed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 to certify energy-saving computers and office equipment. Now, this voluntary program rates a broad range of energy-saving products, including heating and cooling equipment.
At the heart of this program is the Energy Star label – the go-to mark for any energy-efficient product that has met or exceeded the program’s energy-efficiency requirements. Once you see the Star, you’ll immediately know its energy efficient. So how does a product earn this coveted label? Qualified products must:
- Deliver increased energy efficiency while providing the performance and features demanded by consumers
- Allow buyers to recover their investment through energy cost savings in a reasonable amount of time
- Offer energy efficiency through readily available, nonproprietary technologies offered by multiple manufacturers
- Have their energy consumption and performance measured and verified with testing
To get an idea of how much impact the Energy Star label can have on energy consumption, consider the following – commercial buildings account for nearly 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., according to the EPA. Commercial buildings with Energy Star-labeled building shells, lighting and ventilation reduced their energy consumption and emissions by 35 percent.
