We spend a lot of time indoors, and the quality of our indoor air is a big factor in how comfortable and healthy we are at home. If the indoor air quality (IAQ) is poor, it can irritate allergy symptoms, cause chapped lips, pose health risks and result in stuffy houses filled with pollutants. The best way to improve your IAQ is to ventilate your house properly with clean outside air.
When the outside air is also filled with pollen and other allergens or contaminants, it can become difficult to improve the your home’s IAQ. Air cleaners are used to cleanse the indoor air of various pollutants.
What Are the Benefits of Air Cleaners?
- The air will be less contaminated and safer to breathe.
- More allergens will be removed and allergies can be controlled.
- You will be able to sleep and breathe easier.
- The spread of viruses will be minimized.
- Pollutants, such as mold spores, dust mites, household odors, volatile organic compounds and various microorganisms, will be removed from the air.
Types of Air Cleaners That Are Available:
- Mechanical air cleaners – allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold and dust particles are captured by this type of filter and removed from the air. One of the most efficient mechanical air filters is the High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter. HEPA filters can be installed as part of stand-alone air cleaners or retrofitted into a forced-air HVAC system, though this latter option isn’t advised unless a home has special air quality requirements.
- Gas-phase air cleaners – using a sorbent such as activated carbon, this type of air cleaner removes gases and household orders from the air. Gas-phase filters are specific designed to target one, or a limited number, of pollutants and will not remove all types of pollutants from the air.
Other air cleaners are available that can be used to supplement existing air filtration. These include UVGI (ultraviolet germicidal irradiation) systems, PCO cleaners and probably the most popular — electrostatic air cleaners.
