Installing a mechanical ventilation system in your Lorain County home is an excellent way to ensure your household has plenty of clean, fresh air. Whole-house ventilation systems are designed to provide indoor air environments with fresher and healthier air throughout the year. When it comes to selecting the best of these systems for your home, you can choose from one of four main systems – exhaust, supply, balanced and energy recovery. The following is an overview of each type and its features and benefits:
- Exhaust Ventilation. Homes with open floor plans in which depressurization does not pose a safety, structural or health risk are great candidates for exhaust systems. This type uses fans to push stale inside air outside. Fresh air then replaces the outgoing stale air through windows or small openings in the home’s outer envelope.
- Supply Ventilation. This ventilating system is good for people with chronic respiratory issues or who are prone to chemical sensitivities. Supply systems pull air from contaminated areas, filter it, and push it back through a central HVAC system to be conditioned before being redistributed to the living spaces.
- Balanced Ventilation. Also known as Heat Recovery Ventilation, this system is more expensive, but also more versatile, than the aforementioned systems. It works by equally exchanging air inside and outside a building to keep a constant supply of fresh indoor air. While working, the system also transfers heat energy, reducing the load on your central heating and cooling equipment.
- Energy Recovery Ventilation. This type works like the balanced system, but also transfers moisture between the inside and outside environments. This prevents your household from becoming too dry or too humid, depending on the season.
Whichever ventilation system you decide on installing in your household, it’s important to narrow down your choices according to the following comfort qualities:
- Low volume operation, ideally with fan noise ratings below one sone.
- Easy-to-use programmable controls.
- Efficient whole-house air distribution abilities.
- Easily reached fans and air filters.
