With increased attention on poor air quality in homes these days, it is only natural that one area that can have a big impact in that area also gains greater visibility – the cleaning of air ducts in the home.
What’s Involved in Air Duct Cleaning?
Duct cleaning is defined as the cleaning of forced-air heating and cooling system’s ducts, registers and vents, the components that circulate conditioned air throughout the home. Sometimes a duct cleaning can extend to the indoor coil for an A/C or heat pump, condensate drip pans, and the blower or air-handling apparatus. All of these individual components of a heating or cooling system can become contaminated with mold, dust, debris and other material which may then be carried to rooms in the home and contribute to poor air quality.,
Do My Air Ducts Need Cleaning?
If you can see mold, dirt, debris or even dead vermin inside the ductwork of your home, usually at the registers, a cleaning is indicated. However, most ductwork in the home cannot be visually inspected, and that means the help of a qualified technician is needed. A skilled HVAC professional can have the interior of your ducts examined with a camera to show exactly what has taken up residence inside your ducts.
If your heating or cooling system has been operating for years without a professional duct cleaning, it may be advisable to just have them cleaned regardless of what any inspection shows up. Over a period of time, there will always be a buildup of debris, pollen, and various triggers for asthma and allergies in the ductwork and other components, which will then continue to circulate all through the home. There’s no particular recommendation for frequency of duct cleaning, however, since some homes can go years without needing it, while others may need a cleaning every two or three.
