The purpose of HVAC supply vents, which are also called registers, diffusers and grills, is to direct or diffuse air supply into your living space for optimal airflow. If you’re renovating or remodeling and want new vents to match your home’s decor, keep reading to learn how to properly install an HVAC supply vent in your Ohio home.
Wall Vents
To prepare for vent removal and installation, you’ll need a step-ladder, screwdriver, safety goggles, utility knife, measuring tape, notepad and acrylic caulk. First, remove the old vent, measuring the rough wall opening and the vent boot for an accurate reading. Make a note of vent location if you’re installing more than a few, as well as how the screws are secured (i.e. into the drywall, stud or metal duct rim).
Your new vents will come with screws, but your notes will come in handy if some vents require anchor screws for drywall. Before installing the new vent, apply a uniform bead of caulk around the vent rim to fix it to the wall. Then, put the vent into place, and tighten the screws.
Ceiling Vents
Ceiling vents may be round or square and rectangular. These vents are measured and installed in the same manner as wall vents, except if you have round vents. Round vents often attach to round insulated flex ducts. In this case, the vent boot should fit inside the duct rather than outside. The duct and boot should be secured with a clamp, which may be included with the new vent. Just pull the round duct down, so you can insert the boot and clamp it down. Then, apply caulk and tighten down the screws.
Floor Vents
Floor vents are typically square or rectangular — the same as wall vents. The installation procedure is the same, except with no caulk, whether you have carpeting, tile or wood flooring. With carpeting, you’ll probably want to tighten your vents down with screws. With tile or wood flooring, screws are not necessary.
