Upgrading to a programmable thermostat can help you to save money by making your home more energy efficient. Not only can you save money, you can do it without making your home uncomfortably warm in the summer and bone-chillingly cold in winter. Programmable thermostats allow you to set the times that you turn on your heating and air conditioning according to your schedule.
How Programmable Thermostats Work
Your thermostat can use less energy if you set it to a comfortable temperature for the time that you are awake and then set it lower or higher when you are asleep or away. For example, in the winter, you can set it to keep your home 10 degrees lower during the day or late at night. In the summer, you can set it 10 degrees higher.
Does Your Furnace or Air Conditioner Work Harder?
This is a common myth and yes, it is a myth. Your house loses heat in the winter more slowly than it would if it was kept at a higher temperature. Similarly, in the summer it gains heat more slowly than if it were kept at a lower temperature. This means that your HVAC equipment will not have to work harder to keep your home comfortable.
Programming Your Programmable Thermostat
It is important to consider the time that you usually go to sleep and the time that you usually wake up. You can get even greater energy savings by setting the temperature to be lower about an hour before you go to sleep in the winter or higher in the summer. You should also consider the schedules of other members of your household.
