A home HVAC system is a major investment, but making sure yours reaches its intended lifespan will help you get your money’s worth. Despite the toll the Lorain and Elyria area’s weather takes on our systems, it’s possible to keep yours in top form for many years.
Keep the Air Flowing
Furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps are engineered for specific airflow rates and when they don’t get enough air, the components are placed under pressure that can cause early failure.
Investing in a higher-efficiency air filter with a MERV between 7 and 11 and replacing it on schedule keeps your system largely clear of the debris that can limit airflow. Keeping your outdoor condenser unit and indoor evaporator coil free of debris and dust promotes good airflow, which improves your system’s efficiency and extends the life of your home HVAC system. Dust on the evaporator coil strains both the coil itself and the compressor, so keeping this coil clean is vital.
Cleaning either of these components incorrectly can cause damage or drive debris deeper into the component. That’s why it’s important to schedule annual professional maintenance tune-ups during which these and other components will be inspected and cleaned.
Protect Your Electrical Components
Even minor malfunctions in your furnace or air conditioner’s electrical components can cause stress, shortening the components’ lives. Loose wires create excess electrical resistance that strains your components. If your blower motor draws more amps at start-up than it’s designed for, it will fail early.
A problem with your thermostat or furnace ignition can cause your system to short cycle (turn on and off too frequently), which places unnecessary wear on all the components. A defective capacitor can stop your motor from running and an inexperienced technician may suggest a whole new motor.
During an annual tune-up, your HVAC technician will use specialized equipment to test your electrical components and ensure they’re operating as they should be.
