When a problem develops with your HVAC system, it can be time to consider whether to repair or replace it. The decision isn’t always easy. Many aspects play important roles. Consider these questions when deciding.
Is it Needing Frequent Repairs?
When your heater or air conditioner start needing frequent repairs, it is wise to consider the accumulative cost of repairs versus the cost of replacing the HVAC system. As parts age, you’ll see more problems in the future and this adds up. It can be more cost-effective to replace systems that are suffering frequent breakdowns.
Is it Old?
If it is over 10 years old and repairs have increased, skipping the repair bill and choosing replacement, instead is sometimes the better option. However, if the needed repair is minor and you haven’t experienced other issues, such as decreased home comfort or higher energy bills, it might be okay to wait a few more years.
Is it Leaking Refrigerant?
Old air conditioners used R-22 refrigerant, which is being phased out due to environmental hazards. If your air conditioner uses this refrigerant and develops a leak, you can expect to pay a hefty price for recharging it every time. It is usually better to choose replacing these systems with a new model.
Has Home Comfort Decreased?
A common sign of aging HVAC equipment is decreased comfort. If your home experiences more humidity problems in summer and less comfort during any season, it is likely that your HVAC system is close to giving out.
Have Bills Increased?
If your energy rates have remained the same but your bills have increased, your HVAC system has probably lost energy efficiency. This can be due to a number of problems such as frequent cycling, clogged air filters, and frozen coils. In this case, have a technician come out to determine the issues you might be facing. If the issues aren’t easy, inexpensive fixes, it is probably time to replace the system.
