Investing in new or replacement air conditioning equipment can be a significant expense. Part of what you want from your investment is a cooling system that runs efficiently and saves you money every month on your utility bills. A reliable indicator of air conditioner efficiency is the Energy Star label. This symbol, consisting of the word “Energy” and a stylized star under a shallow arc, assures you that the equipment you’re buying has been federal government-tested and certified to be energy efficient.
Energy Star is a collaborative information and conservation program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy. It helps American consumers save money and aid the environment by encouraging practical energy conservation techniques, as well as the manufacture, sale and use of energy-efficient products and appliances. The program has logged some impressive successes. In 2010, Energy Star helped American utility customers save nearly $18 billion on their energy bills while cutting greenhouse gas emissions by the same amount produced by 33 million cars.
The Energy Star program tests and certifies many types of consumer electronics and other energy-consuming items. Computers, kitchen appliances, televisions, light bulbs and entire houses can earn the Energy Star label. Equipment and devices with this certification are energy efficient and can save users about a third on their ongoing energy expenses. Greenhouse gas emissions from certified products will be reduced by about the same amount.
Energy Star-certified air conditioners will be about 14 percent more efficient than standard models. They will have a higher Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which means they will be considerably more energy efficient than models without the label. By looking for Energy Star labels and comparing SEER numbers, you’ll be able to find units that are even more efficient.
