There are many dynamics inside and outside a home that affect temperatures and comfort from room to room. If you experience hot and cold spots in your home, consider a zoning system for delivering comfortable temperatures to make everyone happy.
Comfort factors
Before implementing a zoning system, it’s wise to conduct an energy audit to determine if there are steps you may take to seal your home. This will benefit comfort, help save energy, and actually optimize the effectiveness of a zoning system. The audit will pinpoint ways to better weatherize your home, ranging from sealing air leaks to improving insulation to upgrading windows.
Zoning your home
A zoning system is a network of individual thermostats and duct dampers that adjust the amount of conditioned airflow each room or section (zone) receives based on the temperature set point or program of the thermostat in each zone. The typical home has two to four zones. You may determine your zones by grouping rooms and sections with similar thermal dynamics, and/or the temperature preferences of the occupants.
For instance, a zone could be two bedrooms, or an entire floor. These are common attributes of homes that may benefit from zoning:
- Hot and cold spots throughout the home
- Two or more levels of living space
- Room additions or retrofits in the attic, basement and other areas
- Occupants who prefer or require different temperatures
- An intricate floor plan
Zoning benefits
In addition to providing greater home comfort, zoning your home provides relief from household occupants fussing over thermostat settings. Instead of running the air conditioning excessively to keep particular areas in a home cool, a zoning system saves energy by cooling only the areas that need it, and limiting air conditioning to areas that don’t need it or are unoccupied. This provides comfort and substantial energy savings, while accommodating everyone’s preferences.
