Avoiding Mold Growth In The Drip Pan Of Your Air Conditioner

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: August 28, 2012

Avoiding Mold Growth In The Drip Pan Of Your Air ConditionerAn air conditioner is a welcome appliance in any Northeast Ohio home, where summer temperatures can rise into the high 90s. Annual maintenance will help keep your unit functioning efficiently throughout the season, but there are some maintenance steps that you as a homeowner can also perform, to preserve indoor air quality and prevent mold growth in the drip pan of your air conditioner.

  • Be diligent about filter changes. Several components are needed for mold growth: the spores, their food, adequate temperature and sufficient moisture. A clean filter can help trap mold spores as the air passes through, but as it becomes clogged and dirty over time, the air movement will only serve to distribute the spores back into the air. During the heavy cooling season, experts recommend a monthly filter change.
  • Keep an eye on the drip pan. Standing water in the pan provides the moisture needed for mold growth. An air conditioning unit is designed so the drip pan will drain by itself, but in the case of a unit that requires maintenance or repair, water can accumulate and mold growth can begin. In the event that the pan isn’t draining on its own, dump out the excess water and call a professional technician. This may signal a more serious problem.
  • Stay on top of housework. By keeping your home clean, you prevent mold spores from entering your ductwork, where they can then get blown throughout your home, potentially finding sources of moisture, including in the drip pan.
