If your air conditioner goes out, it is more than an inconvenience. You can’t sleep at night because it’s way too hot. During the day, the temperature and humidity in the house continue to rise, making it almost pointless to shower and attempt to look presentable.
Even if a technician can make it out within a day or two, an air conditioner breakdown can wreak serious havoc on your daily routine. And what if the breakdown occurs on a weekend?
Stay on the lookout for these problems:
- Improper operation – Leaving doors or windows open causes undue stress on your A/C. Also, your air filter should be cleaned or replaced regularly. A programmable thermostat will help you regulate temperatures according to your schedule, saving on energy.
- Poor installation and maintenance – Faulty installation or a lack of timely maintenance can result in improper airflow. Also, it’s common to find that refrigerant is not set to manufacturer-specified levels if the installation is not performed by a qualified professional. A tune-up should be performed every year to resolve these problems.
- Refrigerant leaks – Many people don’t realize the severity of refrigerant leaks. If refrigerant is low, your A/C will not cool properly, and may start blowing out warm air.
- Electric control failure – Wiring and fan controls can wear out over time, especially if the unit is over-sized and cycles on and off too frequently. This can cause problems with the components that rely on the controls for efficient operation.
- Sensor problems – Like the electric controls, the sensors affect how the other components operate. If a sensor is off, the other parts will not function as they should.
- Drainage problems – Debris may clog the condensate drain and block the system’s ability to control moisture levels. Water can leak onto your floors and walls, causing structural damage.
