Around half the typical household’s average annual energy consumption comes from heating and cooling. So upgrading to a more efficient HVAC system could reduce your energy bills significantly. There are a number of energy-saving options available, but one of the most effective is a geothermal heat pump.
The temperature beneath the ground tends to remain nearly constant and relatively mild, whether it’s the height of summer or the dead of winter. A geothermal heat pump utilizes that heat energy. Pipes are laid under the ground, and a water/anti-freeze mixture cycles through them. The liquid absorbs heat from the ground and uses it to heat the indoor air. In the summer, the system deposits heat from the home back into the ground, providing inexpensive air conditioning. Buying and installing a geothermal system can be costly, but over time it can reduce your energy bills significantly. Plus, a generous federal tax credit is available to offset the cost of a qualified geothermal heat pump installation.
In addition, geothermal is environmentally friendly. Your geothermal heat pump is a clean, renewable source of heat energy. It has the lowest emissions of any type of HVAC system, and use of geothermal heat helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution that comes from burning fossil fuels. The more people use geothermal systems across the country, the less fuel is burned to produce energy, and the greater reduction there is in pollution.
If you’re considering a geothermal heat pump for your home, here are a few factors to consider about your property and the surrounding area.
- The ground. Is the soil around your home efficient for heat transfer? This affects how much piping you’ll need and how the system is installed.
- The water. If you live near a lake, pond or other deep body of water, you may be able to use that as your heat source, rather than the ground.
- Space. Laying out pipe horizontally in loops across your property takes a large amount of space. If space is limited, a vertically drilled looping system may be an option, depending on soil and other factors.
