If you’ve been neglecting your furnace filter, it’s time to make a change. Changing the furnace filter is a must for energy savings and comfort. And during the winter, when the furnace is active for a majority of the time, changing the filter is imperative for ensuring airflow and to protect the system.
- Airflow – A clean air filter allows the furnace to operate at peak efficiency. When the filter becomes full, the dust and debris trapped in the filter’s fiber block air from flowing through it. That’s why regular filter changes are a must. Without proper airflow, the furnace will become starved for the large volume of air critical for ensuring an effective heating process. This can lead to inefficient, expensive heating, reduced comfort and furnace breakdowns.
- A clean furnace – Another primary benefit that results from changing the furnace filter involves system cleanliness. The filter is specifically designed to trap particles and dust before they settle on furnace components, where dirt buildup can wreak havoc on the fan blades, motor, burner and more. Once the filter’s surface is full, and it can no longer trap additional particles, dust and debris may be forced around the perimeter of the filter, contaminating sensitive furnace components and getting into your air circulation.
One other perk of regular filter changes? You’ll avoid a situation where any particles that make it around or through the filter will get into your home’s air supply. Changing the filter regularly encourages quality indoor air.
Changing the furnace filter is easy. Stock up on filters so you have a ready supply of clean ones. Then check the filter every month, looking for signs that it can no longer perform. Normally, when a filter has run its course, the material will be dingy or dark. And if you hold the filter up to the light, you won’t see the light shining through a clogged filter. To change the filter, remove the old one from the filter slot, making sure to install the new one with its arrow pointing in the same direction as the arrow for airflow.
