If it’s been more than a year since you’ve had heat pump maintenance performed in your home, there’s no time like the present to schedule this essential service. Ideally, you should schedule heat pump maintenance twice each year, once in the fall and once in the spring, though at the very least, make sure you schedule it annually. To prep your cooling system for the upcoming warmer temperatures, get your heat pump system into good working condition to drive energy costs down and ensure your home stays comfortable as possible.
When a professional HVAC technician tunes up your heat pump, these are some of the tasks included in the service:
- Check the defrost sensors, ensuring the system runs the defrost cycle to remove frost from the coil as necessary.
- Inspect the condensate drain, keeping the drain lines clear to prevent blockages and water damage.
- Treat the condensate drain with an algaecide solution, if high moisture levels are creating mold, algae or other undesirable effects.
- Clean components such as the air handler, motors and fans, coils and compressor.
- Adjust the air handler’s rate of operation as necessary to ensure proper airflow.
- Check the ductwork, making sure it doesn’t leak or allow conduction losses from a lack of insulation.
- Test the control sequence, so the thermostat locks out heating when the heat pump calls for cooling, and vice versa.
- Calibrate the thermostat as necessary for optimal temperature readings.
While your system’s performance will indeed improve with professional heat pump maintenance, you can participate in caring for the system by taking on a few DIY tasks:
- Air filter – Every month, check the filter. If it looks dirty, replace it. Proper air filter care protects the heat pump and boosts indoor air quality.
- Condenser – Vegetation that accesses the condenser compromises airflow and efficiency. Keeping the area around the unit clear is a must.
- Registers and grilles – For sufficient airflow through the home, and to prevent starving the system of necessary return air, don’t block supply and return registers and grilles in the home.
