Have you been on the fence about that A/C replacement? Although you may be debating whether or not you can squeeze a few more years out of your current equipment, an upgrade may be in your best interest. Here are a few tips for knowing when it’s time for an A/C replacement, and the many ways that you will benefit from it.
When is an air conditioner replacement in my best interest?
Generally, if your air conditioner is over 12 years old, or if your repair costs are approaching half of the equipment’s value, it’s time to upgrade to a newer system. But even if your A/C doesn’t quite meet these requirements, you may seriously consider replacing your equipment in order to enjoy these seven immediate and long-term benefits:
- 1. Decreased bills – New air conditioners are designed with higher efficiency ratings and energy-savings features. This results in less energy consumption and lower monthly cooling costs.
- 2. Improved comfort – The same technologies used to improve energy efficiency have also resulted in improved comfort features. New systems promote more even cooling, provide a more constant flow of cooled air, and are better able to control humidity.
- 3. Better indoor air quality – Improved humidity control means that your home’s risk for mold and mildew growth will be significantly reduced.
- 4. Dependable equipment – Avoid the hassle and expense of a mid-season air conditioner breakdown. A new system will ensure smooth and effective performance.
- 5. Warranty protection – Although a full system upgrade will offer warranty coverage, a dry-charged unit can help you out, too. In split systems, a properly matched dry-charged unit can reduce repair costs while offering you protection on your new outdoor equipment.
- 6. Greener refrigerant – New air conditioners are being manufactured with non-ozone depleting refrigerants such as EPA-approved R-410A.
- 7. Tax credits – By upgrading to a qualifying, energy-efficient air conditioner before the end of 2013, you could be eligible to earn significant federal tax credits. The $300 credit also applies to eligible equipment purchased in 2012.
