Most people associate insulation with staying warm and cozy, but attic insulation is one of several all-weather home improvements that’s as important in summer as it is in winter. During warm weather months, solar heat radiates through the roof and into the attic. From here, it can radiate down into the air conditioned space, making your home much warmer than you’d like. If the temperatures in your attic are sweltering, they’re probably impacting the comfort of the rest of your home as well.
Without proper insulation, your attic can reach temperatures as high as 150 degrees. A home energy audit may reveal that not only is some of that heat radiating down into your home, but warm air is moving into your living spaces through air leaks in the attic floor. Your air conditioner will have to work overtime to compensate for the heat coming through the attic. Give your air conditioner a break by installing proper attic insulation and sealing leaks in the ceiling below the attic.
When the attic is properly insulated, less heat is able to transfer downward. In addition, sufficient attic ventilation will help keep attic temperatures from getting so hot. Fiberglass and cellulose are the most common options for home insulation. Loose-fill fiberglass insulation should be a good option for your attic space.
Invest in quality insulation for your attic and you’ll notice a much lower energy bill this summer as you use less electricity to cool your home. Make these warm-weather months as comfortable as possible with a well-insulated, ventilated and sealed attic space that keeps the attic from heating up, and keeps what heat does accumulate up there from getting into your home.
