Most people probably don’t think about air pollution right in their own homes, but it can be a serious problem in even the best of homes. The good news is that the availability of UV light systems has given homeowners an effective weapon for removing harmful microorganisms from inside air. Of course, installation is only the first step. You also need to ensure that the UV (ultraviolet) bulbs continue to burn brightly in order to remain effective.
The Dangers of Microorganisms
When we refer to microorganisms, what we’re talking about are living pollutants ranging from viruses and bacteria to mold spores and mildew, among others. If left in your indoor air, these pollutants will enter your lungs and may trigger or exacerbate allergies and respiratory issues, not to mention the common cold and flu.
Controlling Microorganisms
UV light systems are effective against organic particulates because they have no natural defense against ultraviolet radiation. Once this radiation has penetrated their molecular structure, the bonds holding them together break down. This effectively eliminates them.
Effectiveness of Bright Bulbs
Like all bulbs, those utilized by UV light systems will burn out over time. There are two basic uses of UV lights – to treat the air that’s passing through your home’s ductwork and to treat components of your HVAC system, such as the evaporator coil and condensate pan. For in-duct UV lights, you’ll want to replace the bulbs annually in order to keep them working optimally. But for treating system components, replacement every two years should be frequent enough to keep them operating at peak performance.
