To fully take advantage of a new furnace, you should consider some HVAC add-ons to improve the efficiency, safety and performance of your new heating system. Here are the most popular options, and while you may not be able to use them all, any one can offer substantial benefits:
-
Programmable thermostat. This type of thermostat allows settings to be entered far in advance, so your preferred temperature changes can go into effect when you’re not home or otherwise able to adjust the thermostat. Programmable thermostats will save you both energy and money, and you’ll no longer have to remember to adjust the thermostat throughout the day.
-
Chimney liner. Many high-efficiency furnaces require a chimney liner to be installed as well. These liners act as a flue for the exhaust gases, which can improve both the safety of your unit and its performance. Check with your HVAC contractor to see what type of liner is a good fit for your system.
-
Humidifier. In some cases, installing a new furnace will significantly alter the humidity in your home. A whole-house humidifier installed in your furnace is an easy way to make sure your humidity never drops below optimum levels. If the humidity in your air drops below 30 percent, you are more prone to respiratory illnesses and discomfort, plus your indoor air will feel cooler, something you don’t want in the wintertime, obviously.
-
Efficient air filters. An effective air filter in your forced-air furnace system will remove a variety of airborne contaminants, both protecting furnace components from damaging dirt and debris, and cleaning your indoor air. Consider upgrading to pleated filters or an even more advanced filtration system.
-
Zoning system. Many modern furnaces are compatible with zoning systems. You can separate different parts of your home into zones and then, with individual thermostats and duct dampers, can specify how much heat should go to each zone. This saves on energy use plus accommodates the different comfort preferences of family members.
