Buying new air filters for your home’s forced-air heating an cooling system every month or two isn’t expensive, but it may be unnecessary. Having a clean air filter is important, but upgrading from standard disposable filters to electrostatic air filters may bring you better quality air and save you money.
How Electrostatic Filters Work
Other than the aluminum border, electrostatic filters look similar to your normal filters. In fact, they fit most typical forced-air HVAC systems.
As air passes through the filter, it first comes in contact with polyurethane and polypropylene filtering material. These polymers are designed to create static charges that can be passed to the various unwanted particles in your air. The filter has separate layers with the opposite charge and they attract the charged particles like a magnet.
These filters can trap virtually any kind of airborne particulate, including dust, mold, mildew, viruses and bacteria. Because there are multiple layers with alternating charges, the chances of a particle getting through is slim.
Why Switch to Electrostatic?
There are a few key benefits that make electrostatic air filters more appealing than regular disposable filters. The first is that they are reusable. Just take a few minutes to clean them when dirty with a vacuum or hose.
The main reason to switch is to improve your indoor air quality. Electrostatic air filters have a much greater particulate removal efficiency than standard filters. Removing more particles from the air makes it healthier to breathe, resulting in fewer respiratory- or allergy- related issues in the home.
Airborne particulates also can get trapped in your HVAC system and accumulate and damage system components over time. These improved filters will remove these particle from your system.
