Keeping your central air conditioner (A/C) running efficiently is important during the summer both for energy savings and home comfort. There are several different factors that may affect an A/C’s efficiency, most of which you as the homeowner have control over.
Maintain Proper Airflow
Optimum airflow is extremely important for your A/C to function properly. You should take precautions to make sure that nothing is impeding the flow of air across the coils or through the ductwork. This includes clearing yard debris and other objects from around the outside condenser/compressor, and making sure your air filter is inspected and changed regularly. These steps, along with making sure your registers are clear, will help cool your home down faster, and reduce the amount of time your air conditioner has to run.
Use a Programmable Thermostat
There’s no need for your house to be the same temperature all day when nobody is home. Set properly, a programmable thermostat will ease the strain on your A/C and start to cool your house back down just before you or someone else is scheduled to get home. All you need to do is set your daily schedule in the thermostat, and it will do the rest.
Seal Your Home
Cool air escaping your house, or hot air getting in, can have a major detrimental effect on your A/C’s efficiency. When warm air is infiltrating your home, your A/C will have to work longer and harder to compensate. An older A/C may eventually break down under the stress, and even if it doesn’t, a significant amount of air infiltration will increase your energy bills. Find air leaks in your home’s exterior, and between the attic and living spaces, and seal them with weatherstripping, caulk or spray foam, depending on the type and size of leak.
Add Insulation
Make sure your home is adequately insulated, especially in the attic where summer heat gain can radiate down into your living spaces, forcing your A/C to work overtime to cool your home.
