If you want to be comfortable in your home this summer, controlling indoor humidity should be a top priority. Humidity is a measure of the amount of moisture in the air, and if the humidity is too high in your home, it will feel clammy and uncomfortable. Ideally, you want to keep the humidity below 50 percent for comfort and to control the spread of mold and mildew.
Many homeowners rely on their A/C or heat pump to provide dehumidification. However, when it’s excessively hot or muggy outside, or your equipment is older, your cooling system may not be up to the task. This is when it’s time to consider a whole-house dehumidifier.
A Dehumidification System in Your HVAC System
While a whole-house dehumidifier may sound like an expensive and complicated installation, it’s a relatively simple addition to your HVAC system that can be attached to most forced-air systems. Air circulating in your air ducts will pass through the dehumidifier were moisture is captured and removed via your home’s plumbing system.
There are three main benefits to lowering high humidity levels:
-
More comfort. Humidity makes the air feel damp and warm, the opposite of what you want during the hot summer. After dehumidification, you’ll find that your home is more comfortable, even if you don’t run the A/C as much. Most of these systems will continue to remove humidity when the system is running on “fan-only.”
-
Better air quality. Mold, bacteria and other harmful particles that thrive in humid conditions lower indoor air quality. This puts you at risk for breathing issues while also causing structural damage to your home.
-
Lower energy bills. As a result of having to run your A/C less as a result of drier air feeling cooler, you’ll find that your energy bills decrease. Most homeowners are able to raise the thermostat settings a few degrees after addressing humidification issues.
