One effective way to stay warm this winter, and at a relatively low cost, is to use a programmable thermostat. With a programmable model, you can set its schedule for temperature changes to fit your daily and weekly schedule. Basically, it enables you to set the program ahead of time, and then sit back and save money while the thermostat dials back your heating system when nobody’s home, or when you’re asleep. Many homeowners are able to beat the heating cost blues, while staying warm, by using a programmable thermostat.
The great thing about a programmable thermostat is that you can save money without sacrificing comfort. And you can do so without wracking your brain trying to remember to adjust and readjust the thermostat several times a day. Generally, when you give yourself that chore, you’re going to fall down on the job at some point; the result is your heating system running all day at your regular comfort level, but without anybody at home to enjoy it.
With a programmable model, you can set it to lower the heat to a comfortable sleeping temperature at night, perhaps 60 or 62, and then set it to return to 68 or 69 shortly before you awaken. Then you can set it to drop again during the day while you go to work or school. Even setting it as low as 55 is OK, since nobody will be home to feel the cold anyway. Again, program it to return to your comfort level shortly before you expect to arrive home. If you have a WiFi programmable thermostat, you can adjust it from work, if you know you’ll be coming home early for some reason.
