Fall is a dreaded allergy season for many residents of the Lorain area, but most homes contain allergens year-round, such as mold spores, pet dander and dust mites. The latter are microscopic insects that feed on skin cells and other particles in dust. Exposure to these allergens can trigger respiratory symptoms, headaches and congestion for allergy sufferers, and can even cause more severe issues for those with asthma and other respiratory ailments. Fortunately, though it’s nearly impossible to eliminate allergens from your home entirely, you can lessen their effects. Here are a few tips to help reduce dust mites in your house:
- Clean frequently and thoroughly. Most of us don’t enjoy tidying up, but frequent cleaning is a necessity if you want to get rid of dust and the duct mites it contains. Be sure to use cleaning methods that actually trap the dust, like using a damp rag, rather than a feather duster, and vacuuming instead of sweeping.
- Change your HVAC air filter regularly. Many homeowners forget about the filter on their furnace and A/C, but it’s important to change the air filter routinely. Most companies recommend replacing filters at least every three months, and more often for households with special circumstances such as furry pets or the presence of allergy sufferers. Changing a clogged filter also will boost your HVAC system’s efficiency, so replacing it with a new filter can save money.
- Dust-proof your decorations. Dust mites tend to make themselves at home in heavy fabrics and cushions, so avoid heavy drapes and upholstered furniture as much as possible. Be sure to wash sheets, bedding and furniture covers at least weekly, using hot water. Avoid decorating shelves and other surfaces with knick-knacks, textiles or other items that collect dust.
- Invest in an air cleaning system. Unfortunately, cleaning and redecorating can only do so much. If someone in your household suffers from a dust-mite allergy, a whole-house air purifier is probably the best option. These systems efficiently filter the air throughout your home, and trap dust and other particles to keep them from making you sick.
