Winter has always been associated with increased energy usage as people find an increased need to warm their homes. However, you don’t have to double your energy bills this winter. Here are a few proven winter energy-saving tips to help you minimize energy usage.
Seal All Leaks
It all starts with ensuring that no energy escapes from the rooms. Caulk all leaks and other spaces around doors and windows. Then look for spaces around pipes and electrical conduits that run through walls and seal them as well. Cracks and spaces found in bathrooms and underneath kitchen sinks must be caulked too. If the gaps are large, ask the nearest hardware store keeper for the best sealing material.
HVAC Maintenance
Dirty filters tend to restrict airflow causing unnecessarily high energy usage. These types of problems can be addressed through maintenance and a furnace tune-up. “Tune-up” refers to a collection of activities aimed at improving the performance of the furnace with the aim of increasing efficiency.
Take Advantage of the Sun
There may not be an abundance of sunshine in winter, but you must still make use of what’s available by opening the blinds or curtains on your south facing windows in early winter to take advantage of solar heat gain.
Cover Drafty Windows
Using heavy-duty, clear plastic sheets fitted to a frame, cover the inside of window frames. Ensure that the sealing fits tightly. Installing tight-fitting insulation drapes is also recommended.
Adjust the Thermostat Accordingly
When you’re awake and at home, set the temperature as low as you’re comfortable with. When you go to sleep or get away from the house, use energy-saving settings. You can use a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust your room temperatures accordingly.
Summary
With these winter energy-saving tips and sense of responsibility, expect lower usage and therefore lower energy bills.
