Even though many homeowners are trying to cut their monthly utility bills, some of the methods they’re using are actually energy-saving myths. While many accepted practices work well, some might result in higher utility bills and premature appliance failure.
High Efficiency HVAC Equipment
The prevailing belief that HVAC systems with high efficiency ratings will automatically save energy is true to some degree, but unless your HVAC contractor sized it properly for your home and installed it according to Energy Star guidelines, you won’t experience all of the efficiency it offers.
A system that’s too large or small consumes more energy, reduces comfort and breaks down faster than a system that’s sized right. When choosing new equipment, insist that your HVAC contractor select the size using Manual J software first and install it according to the factory’s guidelines.
Adjusting the Thermostat Increases System Output
Turning your thermostat up or down, depending on the season, doesn’t heat or cool your home any faster, unless you have a variable-speed system. If your system runs at only one speed, it won’t condition your home any faster if you set your thermostat to a temperature higher or lower.
Not Shutting Off Lights and Devices
Not turning lights and electronic devices off because of potential power surges is one of the most common energy-saving myths. Technological improvements from light bulbs to computers have eliminated the high amount of power these devices use when they’re first turned on. Turning electronic devices off and unplugging chargers for portable devices can reduce electrical consumption and prolong system lifespan.
Energy Efficient Homes Cost More
In some cases, an energy efficient home does cost more to construct, but this isn’t always the case. Oftentimes, most people are willing to pay more for an energy efficient home because they will be able to save more money month after month on energy bills.
