If low energy bills are elusive, it could be that your Lorain home is taking on too much heat from deficiencies in the envelope. HVAC energy losses are another common culprit for high cooling costs. If you’re looking for ways to increase efficiency and reduce energy bills this summer, use these tips.
Reduce Heat Gain
There are several areas in the home that contribute to heat gain by air infiltration, conduction and solar heat. You can prevent heat gain from your hot attic by sealing the attic door with foam weatherstripping. Increase insulation levels to R-60. Additionally, seal drafty windows and doors with caulk and weatherstripping, and use drapes and curtains to control streaming sunlight.
Thermostat Settings
Turn up the thermostat to 85 or 90 degrees when no one is home. Set the temperature to 78 degrees to balance savings and comfort when the home is occupied. If you have ceiling fans, use them. The direction of the blades should force air downward to create a wind-chill effect.
Duct Design
Leaky ducts cost big bucks. Check the air ducts for leaks, holes, fallen portions and damage. Use an aerosol sealant or mastic paste for airtight sealing, and wrap it with metal tape for a strong connection. Holes and damage should be checked out by your HVAC tech.
Kitchen and Bath
Use the exhaust fans in the kitchen and bath when cooking and bathing. The bathroom fan should continue to run until windows and mirrors are clear. This reduces moisture gain, which feels warmer than less humid air. Cover pots and pans when cooking. Grill outdoors more this summer for lower cooling costs.
Energy Star
Old cooling systems use substantially more electricity than new higher-efficiency models. Additionally, old A/Cs and heat pumps use ozone-depleting refrigerant. New cooling systems use refrigerants that are more efficient. When it’s time for you to upgrade, look for the Energy Star logo for more efficient cooling systems.
