As your air conditioner ages, there’s a good chance you might start hearing strange sounds. These sounds are often a sign that your A/C system could use some attention. If you hear the following air conditioner sounds, then it’s time to take notice:
- Squealing or screeching sounds – This usually indicates a damaged or worn-out belt that needs replacement, or a blower motor unit that’s in dire need of lubrication.
- Fast-paced “thwapping” sounds – If you hear this sound, there’s probably something stuck on the blower fan blades. It’s also possible that the blades are coming in contact with a portion of the blower housing.
- Constant clicking sounds – This may point towards a defective relay or electrical control. Keep in mind that it’s normal to hear one or two clicks the air conditioner tuns on and off.
- Rattling noises – A rattle from your air conditioner could indicate a loose or poorly mounted component. Failing motors can also emit rattling sounds.
- Constant screaming sound – This sound indicates a compressor or motor failure.
- Humming sound – A failing starting capacitor can emit this sound as it nears the end of its lifespan.
If you hear any of these air conditioner sounds, you should have a trained, experienced technician perform a complete inspection. If you don’t act quickly, you’ll likely run the risk of damaging the A/C system, possibly beyond repair.
