Your home is a sanctuary and it should feel comfortable. If you seem to battle hot and cold spots throughout the year, you don’t have to accept them as a quirk. Simple alterations may deliver the comfort levels you seek.
Remedying Hot and Cold Spots in Your Home
- Upgrade your windows. If you own an older home with standard windows, they may heat up a room during the summer and make it feel drafty in the winter. Adding a window film or upgrading to insulated glass units will reduce energy exchanges, make your home feel more comfortable, and lower your power bills.
- Install a ceiling fan. Heat rises, which may cause the upper level of a home to feel warmer than the lower level, especially if you have a vaulted ceiling. Similarly, during the winter, you may notice that the air feels warmer when you stand than when you sit. Even out the temperature by increasing a room’s air circulation with a ceiling fan. During the winter, a fan pushes warm air downward. In the summer, the fan blows away the heat that your body produces and distributes cool air.
- Check the vents. Furniture, drapes, and other items over the vents in your home obstruct the flow of air. Make sure the vents are open and unobstructed.
- Consider a residential zoning system. If you have multiple levels in your home, tall or vaulted ceilings, multiple rooms that you do not use, or living spaces in an attic, basement, or above a garage, consider installing a residential zoning system. This type of system uses a series of thermostats that monitor different areas of a home and relay information to a control panel that opens and closes dampers accordingly.
- Contact a professional. Issues like having an old HVAC unit or leaks in ductwork can cause you to feel hot and cold spots. Call an HVAC contractor to inspect your system.
