Like all things in life, an HVAC system has a limited life span. While a new unit may seem like a large investment, your system’s under-performance may cost you more in the end. If you’re not sure if you should repair or replace your HVAC unit, consider the following:
- Age: It is a good idea to replace units that are 10 years old or older.
- Energy use: When energy bills continue to increase and you have an older HVAC unit, you might benefit from a replacement. New high-efficiency models save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs.
- Repair frequency: If you find yourself paying for frequent HVAC repairs, it may be more economical to purchase a new unit, especially if you’ve spent 50 percent or more of the unit’s cost to fix it.
- Repair price: Use the 5,000 rule for your older unit. Multiply the age of the unit by the estimated repair cost. If the amount is $5,000 or greater, replace it.
- Refrigerant type: As the EPA phases out R-22 refrigerant, prices for the coolant continually increase. When an HVAC system that uses R-22 has a coolant leak or needs topping off, it may be best to replace it with a unit that uses R-410A, which is more eco-friendly and economical.
- Uneven temperatures inside the home: As HVAC systems age and operate less effectively, they may cause hot and cold spots, or make a home feel too humid. When your house’s ductwork is in good shape and you experience uncomfortable temperatures inside, it might be time to replace the older system.
- Excessive noise: Just as it is important to have good indoor air quality in your home, noise pollution should be at a minimum. Newer systems are quieter than older HVAC models, allowing you to enjoy a more peaceful environment.
