Fall allergy season is in full swing in Elyria, and if you’re sniffling and scratching at your eyes, improving your indoor air quality will help ease the suffering while you’re at home. A three-pronged approach that combines source control, ventilation, and air cleaning will go a long way toward reducing the severity of your allergies and improving overall health.
Control Allergens at the Source
Keeping allergens out of your home in the first place is the best way to combat seasonal allergies.
- Wipe your pets’ paws and fur with a damp cloth when they come in from outside to remove pollen and other allergens they pick up in the yard.
- Remove your shoes at the door to avoid tracking allergens like pollen, mold spores, and chemicals into your home.
- Use nontoxic cleaning solutions to keep chemical pollutants out.
Ventilate for Cleaner Air
Ventilation is the process of exchanging stale, polluted indoor air with fresh, cleaner outdoor air.
- If your home is new or tightly sealed, install a mechanical ventilator to remove old air and bring in fresh air while transferring heat or humidity from the outgoing air to the incoming air.
- Turn on the exhaust vents in the kitchen and bathroom while you’re cooking or bathing to remove chemicals and moisture, which can cause mold and mildew growth.
Use Air Cleaners to Remove Pollutants
Air cleaners come in a variety of sizes and types, and they’re a good way to remove the pollutants that make their way into your home’s air.
- Install a portable electronic air cleaner in the bedroom to breathe better at night.
- Consider installing a whole-house air filter in the ductwork to remove particles, or have UV lights installed to kill biological contaminants like dust mites and mold spores. Annual preventive maintenance will help ensure proper airflow for optimum filtration.
- Replace your furnace filter as soon as it’s dirty to ensure it’s trapping the most particles possible.
