It’s no secret that a programmable thermostat can be a tremendous money saver, but only if you know how to harness its potential. By properly scheduling the times you use your heating system, you can curtail excess energy use while maintaining your home’s desired comfort levels.
Consider Your Daily Schedule
Your daily routine has a big influence on how much energy you’ll save with your programmable thermostat. It’s usually a good idea to set your thermostat according to your work, school and activity schedules.
It’s also a good idea to choose a thermostat that works best for your daily routine. You’ll usually have three different types of programmable thermostats to choose from:
- 5+2 Model – This model is ideal if you have the same schedule during the week and another schedule during the weekend.
- 5-1-1 Model – Similar to the 5+2 model, the 5-1-1 model splits the weekend into individual days, giving you more flexible control during Saturday and Sunday.
- 7-Day Model – This type of programmable thermostat offers the most flexibility, allowing you to program individual settings for all seven days and with four or more temperature periods each day.
Use Those Setbacks
Being away from home or fast asleep are the two times you won’t need your heating system as much as you would during the day. You can take advantage of this by programming your thermostat to set temperatures back by 10 to 15 degrees. By setting your thermostat settings back so for eight hours at a time, you can save a significant percentage annually on your energy bills.
