5 Facts to Know About Ductless Mini Splits

A ductless mini split is one of the most recent options for heating and cooling homes that offers unique advantages over more common forced-air central systems. They use the same technology and engineering that central systems do, but they don’t require ductwork for air distribution, solving some of the challenges associated with more traditional ducted systems. In addition, ductless systems offer more benefits.

1. High energy efficiency. Ductless systems include air conditioners and heat pumps, and both must meet the same energy efficiency standards that central systems do. A ductless heat pump equipped with a scroll compressor increases heat output, making it possible to maintain warm temperatures, even during cold winter weather.Inverter technology cuts electrical usage from frequent starts and stops by running the compressor continuously, albeit slowly. This technology also improves summer humidity control and winter heating.

   In addition to their high efficiency performance, ductless systems don’t have any air or thermal losses from ductwork since the conditioned air they provide goes directly into the room or space. Uninsulated or leaking ducts may have energy losses as high as 30 percent, none of which would occur with a ductless system.

2. Versatility. A ductless mini split uses an indoor air handler and an outdoor condenser. The air handler can be placed on the wall, ceiling or floor, and since it doesn’t require ducts, it gives you placement flexibility.
3. Easy installation. Although they require a professional for installation, it’s a fairly simple process since the condenser and air handler are easy to connect with a thin conduit. The refrigerant, power and drainpipe are pre-installed, which speeds the process.
4. Expandable. A larger ductless system can support four separate air handlers, making it possible to condition an entire home using ductless equipment.
5. Enhanced temperature control. Each air handler has its own thermostat for energy savings when you’re not using a room or space.
