A zoning system allows you to direct heating and cooling where you want it, when you want it. You’ve probably noticed that your home hosts an assortment of temperatures under one roof. Unfortunately, you’ve only got one HVAC system controlled by a single thermostat to accommodate and keep everyone comfortable. Set the thermostat just right to heat one room, and somebody’s invariably too cold or too hot in another. Even worse, you’re often paying to heat and cool rooms that aren’t even occupied. A zoning system converts your house into two or more independent temperature zones controlled by programmable thermostats — without the expense adding a second furnace or A/C.
How Zoning Works
Motorized dampers installed inside your ductwork open and close to control airflow into defined zones. The dampers are controlled by dedicated thermostats in each zone. When the furnace or A/C is off, the default position for all dampers in the house is open. Let’s say you have a two-zone system and the thermostat in zone 1 signals for heating. The controller closes dampers to zone 2, the furnace cycles on, and warm air flows only into the rooms comprising zone 1. If the thermostat in zone 2 subsequently signals for heat, dampers open and heat is also distributed to zone 2. As the temperature in each zone reaches its independent thermostat setting, the controller closes dampers to terminate airflow to that zone. When all zones are at the desired setting, the furnace cycles off and all dampers revert to the default open position.
Benefits of a Zoning System
- Lower operating costs by up to 30 percent. You’re no longer wasting energy heating and cooling unused areas.
- Less wear and tear on your furnace and A/C. A multi-zone system actually runs fewer total operating hours than a single zone system.
- Improved indoor comfort. Dedicated thermostats allow occupants to fine-tune temperatures in a particular area of the house.
