When it’s time to give your home a thorough cleaning this season, remember to include your heating and air conditioning system. HVAC spring cleaning helps ensure that your home will be cooled efficiently as the weather gets warmer.
Wipe Off Registers
Registers in your floor can get filthy when dust, dirt and other debris falls inside them and builds up there. This spring, take off each floor register, and let them soak in soapy water. Wipe them off with a sponge to remove all traces of dirt and debris. Dry off the registers with a towel, and put them back in place in the floor. As you’re cleaning your registers, block off the open ducts to prevent anything from falling inside.
Dust Return Air Vents
Return air vents collect dust and other debris when your HVAC system runs. This lowers the indoor air quality in your home and makes your system work even harder to heat or cool efficiently. When you’re ready to do HVAC spring cleaning, dust off these return air vents to get rid of debris. You can also vacuum off these vents with a hose attachment if wiping them with a rag isn’t enough to remove caked-on dust and dirt. Although you should be able to dust off your return air vents while they’re in place, you can remove them from the wall for easier access.
Clean the Condenser Units
The outdoor condenser unit of your HVAC system can become covered with dirt and other debris. If this happens, it makes it more difficult for your system to run at optimal efficiency. If your condenser unit needs a good cleaning, first shut the power to it off for safety. Clean off the fins of the unit with the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. When this is done, clean the area around the unit by getting rid of vegetation that’s growing too close to it.
