Stop Sniffling With These Allergy Tips

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: May 10, 2016

Stop Sniffling With These Allergy TipsSpring in Ohio means changing temperatures, greening grass and blossoming trees and flowers. Unfortunately, for many people spring also means allergy symptoms due to higher amounts of ragweed, grass, and tree pollen floating in the air. Follow these allergy tips to reduce your misery this season.

Keep Windows Closed

This time of year, it can be tempting to open up a few windows on a nice day. However, if you are an allergy sufferer, doing this sets you up for allergy attacks. It is nearly guaranteed that pollen will be riding in on that fresh air.

Keep the Home Cleaner

Allergens like pollen are often carried into the home on clothes, hair and shoes and then these allergens are deposited on floors and furniture. One way to keep these indoor air pollutants under control is to clean the home more frequently during spring. Vacuum floors and upholstery at least once a week and keep dust levels under control by damp-cleaning hard surfaces. Launder bed linens weekly and use allergy covers on mattresses and pillows.

Check Air Filters

The air filter in your air conditioner is intended to keep particles out of the unit and out of your home’s air supply. You should consider the filter to be a top agent in defending against allergens like pollen and dust. It will only work at top efficiency if it is clean, however. Check filters every month and replace them when they appear soiled.

It is also important to use an above-average filter rather than go for the cheapest available. Look for pleated filters over flat-surfaced filters because pleated filters trap more particles. Discuss your options with an HVAC technician who is familiar with your air conditioning system.

Have your Air Conditioner Cleaned and Checked

If your A/C is dirty inside or not working correctly, your indoor air quality will suffer. Call your technician to perform a maintenance visit to help deter mold spores, dust, and pollen from invading the home.
