When it’s time to upgrade your heating and cooling, make sure you know your options. Technology has advanced in leaps and bounds over the years, and if you choose the right HVAC features, it can mean better comfort and energy savings. Here are some advanced digital features and other improvements to look for when buying your new HVAC system.

Smart Thermostat

You might have heard of programmable thermostats, or perhaps you have one installed with your current system. These thermostats save energy by allowing you to customize temperature settings according to your schedule.

Smart thermostats go several steps beyond older thermostats. Not only can you program the temperature, but you can also check your home’s climate and change the settings remotely. All you need to access the thermostat is a Wi-Fi-enabled device and special app.

Smart thermostats are equipped with touch screens and other user-friendly features. Use them in conjunction with other HVAC additions, such as whole-house dehumidifiers, and watch your home comfort and efficiency improve very quickly.

Variable Speed Air Handlers

Instead of surging on with each cycle and then shutting off abruptly when the heating or cooling cycle has ended, variable speed air handlers operate continuously and adjust the air speed according to need. What this means for you is more energy efficiency and greater comfort, because the indoor temperature won’t vary as much.

Since variable speed air handlers don’t run at full speeds, they use less energy and are naturally quieter. As an additional (and very important) bonus, indoor air is filtered continuously, leading to lower humidity and better air quality.

Filter Check Light

It sounds so simple, but this feature can save you money. Dirty filters are one of the leading causes of problems like frozen coils and reduced energy efficiency. A filter check light alerts you when it’s time to change that filter so you don’t forget again. You can also set up alerts for tasks like filter changes on your new smart thermostat.
