Many homeowners try to accomplish the impossible — provide consistent and comfortable heating and cooling with one thermostat controlling the temperatures in the entire house. Practically speaking, however, a single thermostat is limited to controlling the temperature to the area where it’s located. Other rooms and levels with different climate characteristics are bound to get uncomfortably hot or cold when a single thermostat is controlling temperatures. Fortunately, a zoning system can address this problem.
With zoning systems, the home is divided into two or more areas (zones) that heat or cool differently. Usually, the zones are just different floors in a house, though they also can be designated based on other characteristics, such as vaulted ceilings, different building materials, the amount of space given to windows, and orientation to the afternoon sun. Each zone is provided independent temperature control, either with its own thermostat or from a centrally located control panel. The thermostat for that zone controls automated duct dampers that open and close when more or less heating or cooling is needed.
Benefits of a Zoning System Include:
- Energy savings. With one thermostat, you’re heating or cooling the entire house, even when you might only be using one or two rooms or one level. A zoning system allows you to stop the flow of conditioned air to unoccupied rooms, saving energy and money.
- Less stress on equipment. When your HVAC system isn’t being overworked trying to heat or cool the entire house, the equipment will last longer without malfunctioning.
- Better family relations. The battle over the thermostat in a one-thermostat house can get downright ugly. This can be avoided when family members can just move to another part of the house with its own temperature control.
- The use of your whole house. Some homes with just one thermostat end up having hard-to-heat or cool areas that don’t get much use. A zoning system makes every part of the house usable.
