During this Thanksgiving season, it’s traditional to take stock and call to mind all the things we’re thankful for. So while you’re at it, you might as well give thanks for all the terrific home comfort solutions that are available to modern homeowners.
And after you express your thanks, why not contact your HVAC consultant about including some of these when you replace your current system?
1. Always go for higher efficiency. Furnaces are rated by AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) and air conditioners by SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio). The higher the number, the more efficient the appliance. Whenever it comes time to replace your HVAC system, be sure to get a more efficient system with a higher rating and save money on your utility bills.
2. Go for added features. Get superior efficiency from your air conditioner by adding these:
- Thermal expansion valve. This valve efficiently regulates the refrigerant as it flows into the evaporator.
- Automatic fan delay switch. This switch lets the fan run a bit longer after the compressor switches off so that the cooling is extended.
You might also choose an HVAC system with a variable speed air handler for greater comfort. Variable speed handlers help modulate the conditioned air, distributing it in a gentler, more even way.
3. Install a programmable thermostat. These thermostats allow you to program efficient schedules for heating and cooling. Set the temperature a few degrees lower in the winter while the home’s occupants are sleeping or away. Set it higher in the summer during these times. You could save as much as 10 percent annually on utility bills.
4. Install a whole-house air purifier. There are several kinds of whole-house air purifiers designed to help your HVAC system improve your indoor air quality. Choose an ultraviolet germicidal irradiation light to control mold and fungus, or an electrostatic filter to capture airborne particulates such as dust, dirt, pollen, pet dander and others.
