Most homeowners think of their HVAC system as a way to stay comfortable – warm in the winter, cool in the summer. That’s only part of what a good HVAC system can do. Your HVAC system can also be an integral part of making sure the air your family breathes inside your home is clean and healthy.
How Can My Home’s Air Get Dirty?
We’re all aware that the air outside can get polluted from everything from vehicle exhaust to forest fires. However, most of us don’t think about how those factors can affect the air inside our home, too.
Outside air has a way of making its way inside, so anything you breathe outside that might affect your health can also be found inside. This includes but isn’t limited to:
- pollen
- dust
- exhaust gasses
- dander
- cigarette smoke
- mold spores
- bacteria and viruses
How Do I Clean My Home’s Air?
Your home’s indoor air quality, or IAQ, is greatly affected by a couple of factors relating to your HVAC system. The first, as you may already know, is your air filter. This filter serves two jobs. It cleans dust, pollen, and other pollutants out of the air to keep your HVAC system working well. It also improves your homes IAQ for your family’s health.
Unfortunately, filters have one weakness. In order to work, they have to be able to let air flow through them. Those same air holes also let smaller pollutants escape through into your HVAC system. Eventually, they get pumped back into your living space.
Remove Smaller Pollutants With UV Lights
One of the best ways to deal with those smaller pollutants is to install UV lights in your HVAC system. These lights use ultraviolet wavelengths to attack mold spores, bacteria, and other contaminants. As air circulates through your HVAC system, more of these pollutants are removed, leaving you with cleaner air. This effective system is also safe since it’s installed inside your ductwork or near your evaporator coils.
