Cutting the cost of your cooling bills leaves more money in your pocket, and it’s possible to achieve summer savings without compromising your comfort. Besides lower energy costs, these tips will help prolong the life of your equipment.
- Get your air conditioning system tuned up by an HVAC pro. Technicians clean, adjust and lubricate the components and make sure that each is working as it should. The HVAC check should include measuring the refrigerant level and adding more if it’s needed. A system that has too little refrigerant won’t run as efficiently as it should, and it may even cause the indoor coil to freeze over.
- Check the air filter monthly, especially if you have pets or carpeting. When the filter is clogged with dust, it slows down the air flowing through the blower compartment, forcing your system to run longer to cool your home.
Clean filters are an inexpensive way to keep the A/C running comfortably and efficiently throughout the summer. Besides summer savings, you’ll prevent unnecessary wear on your HVAC system when you keep the filters clean.
- Pay attention to the outdoor condenser. Dust that covers the coils and fins will slow the cooling process. Hose them off gently with the hose. Dead leaves and weeds can block the airflow through the condenser and it’s a good idea to remove shrubs that are within three feet of the condenser.
If you have lawn around the unit, be careful not to blow the grass clippings at the condenser. They may cover the coils and reduce cooling efficiency. If they dry on the coils and fins, the residue may be difficult to remove.
- Install a programmable thermostat if you’re routinely away. Such a device will give you year-round savings. You can set the temperature higher for the periods you’re away, and program the thermostat to cool your home shortly before you return.
These summer savings tips will trim your cooling bills and assure that your HVAC system runs dependably through out the cooling season. To learn more, contact Energy 1 Heating & Air Conditioning, providing HVAC services for Lorain-area homeowners.
