Are you and your kids ready for back-to-school festivities? One thing you might not have yet added to your to-do list is maintenance around your home. Here are a few of our favorite maintenance tips to make sure everything is up and running by the time school starts:
Hire a Technician for Annual Inspection
The best way to keep your HVAC equipment operating at full capacity and full efficiency is to have it checked annually. A professional technician, preferably one who is NATE-certified, will provide you with a rundown of how your system is performing, along with any suggestions to make it even better.
Replace or Clean the Air Filters
Air filters keep your air clean by catching small bits of debris that would otherwise be distributed throughout your home and cause respiratory issues, especially for those suffering from asthma and similar ailments. It only takes 1-3 months for a filter to get clogged up and negatively affect efficiency, so it’s important that you either replace or clean the filter on a regular basis, depending on the type you have.
Clear Debris from Outdoor Unit
Over the summer, your HVAC equipment’s outdoor unit can gather dirt, leaves, and other kinds of debris. Sometimes, you might even get what’s left of a bird’s nest on top! To keep your system running smoothly once school is back in session, you need to remove any of this stuff and then wash it down with a hose.
Seal the Ducts
Over time, the ductwork in your home will experience gaps, tears, and holes, all of which hurt your HVAC equipment’s efficiency. Spray foam that expands to seal these areas is a perfect solution and doesn’t cost much. That being said, if you have extensive damage and need to have your ductwork replaced, it may be time to call on the help of a professional.
