If you’ve recently moved into one of the Lorain area’s many beautifully cared for apartments, you’ve probably noticed apartment maintenance issues aren’t always clear cut. Get up to speed on the norms so you can keep your place in shape without spending unnecessarily.
The Basics
While it’s your landlord’s responsibility to install properly working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, you’ll need to test them regularly and replace the batteries yearly. If a detector starts beeping because it’s due for replacement, let your landlord know.
When you move in, your apartment should be fit with relatively new lightbulbs. If one burns out, though, changing it is part of your apartment maintenance responsibilities.
Major Appliances
Major appliances such as your refrigerator, furnace, and washer and dryer wear out over time. If an appliance develops an issue after normal use, contact your landlord about repairs. Get in touch as soon as you notice something’s wrong. Addressing the problem while it’s still minor means you won’t be left without your appliance due to a breakdown.
Some routine appliance maintenance jobs are up to you. Regularly clean your dryer’s lint trap and the outdoor end of the vent. If you have access to your HVAC system’s air filter, replace it on schedule. If your apartment has a heat pump, periodically remove debris from the outdoor unit’s exterior using a soft brush.
Your furnace and air conditioner require annual professional maintenance inspections to remain in top form and achieve optimal energy efficiency. If your landlord isn’t scheduling these, ask about it.
Your Plumbing System
Plumbing, like appliances, can develop issues due to normal wear and tear. If you notice a leaking pipe or dripping faucet, call your landlord.
Clogs can go either way. If your toilet or garbage disposable clog because of something you threw in there, it’s your responsibility to solve the problem. If, however, you have repeated clogs and can’t determine the cause, notify your landlord.
