If you’re preparing to upgrade your home’s central heating and cooling system, take some key steps before the new HVAC system installation from personal preparations to professional services.
Follow these guidelines before any new HVAC system installation:
Energy Audit
Your trusted local HVAC contractor probably will be available to perform an energy audit/analysis of your home in advance of the installation. It doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of money on a new HVAC system for a house that’s leaking air or doesn’t have adequate insulation. The energy auditor will conduct tests with high-tech diagnostic equipment that are designed to find where air is leaking from (or into) the house exterior and where insulation is insufficient. Armed with this information, you can proceed to seal the air leaks and upgrade insulation (or pay someone else to do it).
Load Calculation
The next step is to make sure the contractor conducts a heating or cooling load calculation for your home, a process that determines how much heating/cooling is necessary to make the home comfortable. This calculation should precede the contractor’s recommendation for the correct HVAC system size. Load calculations consider a variety of factors including the home’s layout and size, level of energy efficiency, window coverage, orientation on the lot, among others. A heating or cooling system that’s either too large or too small will result in several problems, including energy waste, uneven heating or cooling, and stress on system components.
Sealed Ductwork
The home’s ductwork should be properly sealed and cleaned before the new HVAC system installation. You don’t want a situation where the new system is moving air through leaky or clogged ductwork.
Final Preparations
As a final step, clear the area where the new system will be located, moving aside boxes, furniture and other items. And this may sound like a joke, but if you have an aggressive dog, put him outside!
