As fall approaches and the temperature drops, it’s important to be aware of your home’s air quality. Of course, this is important any time of year, but the reasons and the ways you deal with it in fall conditions are a bit different than in summer. So here are five major air quality concerns for Ohio in the fall, and what to do about them:
Temperature changes
Fall may start out almost as hot as summer, and rise and fall for a while before settling down. This could overwork your HVAC system, wearing it out and causing it to do a sub-par job, lowering air quality. To prevent this, get a smart thermostat which can regulate temperature more effectively.
Humidity
Ohio’s fall humidity levels often average between 70 and 80 percent. That high level of moisture fosters mold, mildew, airborne bacteria, and a host of other contaminants. Therefore, one of your major air quality concerns is to keep the humidity under control. Running your A/C will dehumidify the air and help eliminate those impurities.
Airborne contaminants
Even after dehumidifying, dust and other contaminants can build up in the air, triggering allergies, asthma, and more. Dust and vacuum your home regularly to keep those contaminants under control.
Air filtration
Your A/C helps filter contaminants out of your air to keep it clean. But remember, you ran it all summer to keep cool. Now you’re running it again to reduce humidity. All those contaminants build up, ultimately circulating back into your home. Change your filter regularly to keep the air clean.
Air circulation
When temperatures drop, you often seal your home up tight, shutting all the doors and windows and not letting any outside air in. This means the same air, contaminants and all, is circulating through your home again and again, getting more polluted as time goes on.
