If you’re the owner of a home that’s been around for a while, there’s a good chance that you’re well-versed on the difficult of heating old homes during the colder months of the year. Let’s take a look at a few of your options and then you can decide which would be best for your household.
Forced-Air System
Most modern homes are equipped with a forced-air system. This option is available for your older home, but you should be aware that in addition to the cost involved, there’s a good chance that its appearance will be less than flattering. And, to top it all off, you’ll probably need to sacrifice closet space to make room for it.
Mini-Duct Forced-Air System
A forced-air system that utilizes mini-ducts is typically thought of as a component of air conditioning. However, this type of system can also be used for heating with the use of an electric furnace.
Upgraded Fireplace
If you’re already using a fireplace for warmth, the simplest solution might be to upgrade what you currently have. Some homeowners who choose this option use electric heat inserts to give them faux flames for the illusion of fire. Other opt for gas-fired inserts that can be used even when the power is out.
Radiant Floor Heating
Typically, this type of system is used with tile flooring, but it can also be used with other types of flooring, including carpet and laminate.
Hot-Water and Steam Radiators
Once a mainstay for many homeowners, hot-water and steam radiators have seen a bit of a resurgence of late. They provide you with an effective heating solution that has the added benefit of being energy-efficient.
